What types of inks do Stampin' Up! offer?

Stampin' Up! offers different types of inks, whose characteristics lend themselves to specific tasks and techniques, stamping surfaces, cleaning requirements and suitability for scrapbooking.  Below is a listing of the inks you can purchase through Stampin' Up!, including a guide to their use.

 

DYE INK

Description:

Water-based dye ink

Stampin' Up! Products:

Classic Stampin’ Pads and Ink Refills
Classic Stampin’ Spots
Stampin’ Write Markers

Advantages:

Water-based.
Fast drying.
Water-soluble.
Washable, except Basic Black and Basic Gray, which are waterproof dyes.  These are best for using with water-colouring as they do not bleed.

Main Uses:

For use on glossy or matte finish card stock or paper.
Water-coloring.
Dying.

Scrapbooking Suitability:

Acid free, pH-balanced.

PIGMENT
INK

Description:

Permanent non-bleeding pigment ink

Stampin' Up! Products:

Craft Stampin’ Pads and Ink Refills (Whisper White only)
Stampin’ Write Journaler (Basic Black only)

Advantages:

Water-based.
Slow drying, great for heat embossing.
Water-soluble.
Washable, except Stampin’ Write Journaler, which is waterproof.
Thick emollients and rich pigments (colour) that resist bleeding when dry.

Main Uses:

For use on absorbent surfaces.  Heat set or heat emboss if used on glossy or coated paper or nonporous surfaces.
Has an opaque look on coloured card stock.
Heat embossing.
Chipboard, fabric*, wood*.
*must be heat set.

Scrapbooking Suitability:

Acid free, fade-resistant, non-toxic, pH-balanced.
Stampin’ Memories product (suitable for scrapbooking).

METALLIC
PIGMENT
INK

Description:

Rich metallic pigment ink

Stampin' Up! Products:

Encore!®  Pads and Ink Refills (Gold and Silver)

Advantages:

Water-based.
Dries faster than most pigment ink but slower than dye ink.
Water-soluble.
Rich metallic look.

Main Uses:

For use on absorbent surfaces.  Heat emboss if used on glossy or coated paper or nonporous surfaces.
When used in a scrapbook, embossing with clear powder is recommended to avoid ink flaking.

PERMANENT
INK

Description:

Permanent decorative ink

Stampin' Up! Products:

StāzOn® Ink Pads and Ink Refills (Jet Black and Cotton White)

Advantages:

Solvent-based.
Quick-drying.

Main Uses:

For use on any porous or nonporous surface.
Use it to stamp an image before water-colouring.

Cellophane bags, buttons,  ribbon, glass, metal, ceramic, fabric, etc.

Cleaning:

Scrapbooking Suitability:

WATERMARK
INK

Description:

Watermark or tone-on-tone stamping ink

Stampin' Up! Products:

VersaMark®

Advantages:

Water-based.
Slow drying, perfect for heat embossing.

Main Uses:

For use on glossy or matte finish card stock or paper.
Watermark or tone-on-tone effect.
Heat embossing.
Resist stamping.
Poppin’ Pastels.
